Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd. (5802) plans to sell a sodium-ion battery it is developing to makers of electric and hybrid passenger cars, expanding beyond the original target of commercial-vehicle fleet operators.
“Technically, it should be possible,” Mitsuo Nishida, a senior managing director at the Osaka-based company, said in an interview. “We can expect overall sales of the batteries to be boosted because we are now targeting a much big sector of the automotive market.”

電壓提升30%,最大巡航距離上看500公里至1,000公里
現行在上市販售的電動車,大多都採用了鋰離子電池組為其供應電源。若以美國電動車廠Tesla,近期引起不少話題的Tesla S電動車為例,將大量鋰離子電池組配置在底盤架構上的Tesla S「僅擁有」257.5公里的最大巡航距離。雖然200多公里的最大距離,已足以滿足日常生活需求,但消費者一直期待電動車有天能夠達到與汽油車款相仿的巡行距離,而若Toyota之鈉離子電池能夠研發成功,未來的駕駛確實能夠在不充電的狀況下,將電動車從臺北開到高雄。
當Toyota對硬幣大小的鈉離子電池試作品進行測驗時,發現鈉離子電池在室溫狀態下,擁有了比傳統鋰離子電池高30%左右的電壓值。而電壓值的提升之所以重要,是因為電壓值即為衡量電動車行駛距離的重要指標。雖然仍需進一步分析,但Toyota仍表示:「 (電動車) 連續行駛距離將大幅延長,500至1,000公里的目標已來到眼前」。Toyota預計,鈉離子電池將會於2020年左右投入實際應用,且目前正在加速鈉離子電池的研究工作。
